Crate Training Seems The Way, but what if you can't go outside at a convenience?
Okay, I’ve read plenty on housebreaking.
Using the crate to train and taking the puppies outside every hour or so.
But for me, going outside is not much of a convenience, I have to go down stairs, and with my parents being the ‘extra-safe’ type, i’d have to remove 3 locks, and a pillar block of wood to get to the backyard.
That’s quite a hassle and most of us are never downstairs so how will the pup eventually "cue" us that she needs to go pee when it’s still so far away?
Also, my pup isn’t able to travel up and down the stairs yet?
Has anyone had any successful alternatives besides going outside?
If so, I’d love to hear some, otherwise, I’ll try my best to crate training the traditional way.

If your dog is small, and a female, you may have luck with this method> http://www.kturby.com/litter/litter.htm
If it larger, or male, then you are stuck with getting a LOT of exercise..
this is an excellent site on crate training> http://www.inch.com/~dogs/cratetraining.html
Should have thought of all that hassle before you got a dog that would need to go outside, and got yourself a cat instead..
Instead of trying to form the dog into the way you are doing things at the moment, working it the other way around and spending some more time downstairs so the pup doesn’t end up with some infection trying to keep it in? (kidding).
It may not be convenient but it’s necessary. Don’t avoid outside unless you want your dog as an inside dog to never go outside.
When it came to potty training, I knew my dog would be too big to have a doggie-door, if I put one in, anyone would have access to my house! We trained him with poochie-bells (you can buy them online or make some that are similar on your own).
Every time I took my dog outside to go to the bathroom, I’d ring the bells that are hanging on the door knob and say, "let’s go potty outside!!!" He got the hang of it pretty quickly, and now he nudges the bells with his nose when he needs to go outside.
I don’t recommend wee wee pads, or anything that reinforces going to the bathroom in the house. The crate is only going to work if you take your dog outside at regular intervals when you’re home so he/she associates going to the bathroom with being outside. Potty training is not convenient for us, but it’s well worth the effort!!!
Good luck!
