How do I teach my dog to like his crate, and not be scared of it?
I just adopted a 1 year and 3 month old border collie/Australian shepherd dog. I think the people who had him before me used the crate as punishment. What is the easiest way to fix this. I tried praising him and giving treats but he just spits the treat back at you.

The best thing to do is find what motivates him. Is he toy or treat motivated? Then make it a game. toss the toy or treat inside and when he goes in to get it praise like made and if it’s a toy tug and play with him/her for a bit. And then start closing the door for short periods when he/she goes in and then open th door and make a big fuss about it. With this you can also incorporate a command like "kennel up" so your dog will go in when you ask.
Lay pillows or a blanket in there and some treats and toys.Do NOT close the crate door,leave it open.Even if he only goes in for a few seconds then comes out still praise him,don’t scold him.
wanna know another way if the dog is very friendly?Well I’m a 12 year old girl and my miniature poodle never liked crates either.We used the above information and also we tried this.
Me or my little sister would crawl into the crate,sit there for a few seconds,completely relaxed then crawl back out.My dog would take a few steps into the crate or goo fully into the crate after we did this/
Get an exercise pen they are open on top and they don’t feel so confined, they are great and my dog is happy with it. Good luck
When I started getting my almost 2 year old dog to use her crate, I got her to eat in it.
After she was comfortable with that I would get her to lay in there with the door open.
Then She started going to town in it.
Then She started sleeping in it!
The unfortunate fact is because of his possible previous experience with being crated, this is probably one of the dogs who can’t be crated. You could try having it in the living room, top and 3 sides covered, and door open, with his bedding and any toys he has in there so he might use it in the same way a dog will use a regular dog bed. However, there’s no point freaking him out and I think as you have only just adopted him, until he’s more settled and comfortable with you, and knows you won’t abuse him (or crate use), you’d do better to set up a room for him if it’s necessary for him to be confined. After all the main use of a crate is for puppies, to keep them out of danger when you can’t supervise them. With a slightly older dog, this shouldn’t be quite as necessary.
We only use the crates for our two to sleep in overnight – they are 2.5 and 1.5 years now, and when we go out, we leave them in the kitchen – no crates.
If the crate was used as a punishment, then it may be hard to get him to trust it. What I did is I made the crate comfortable with a plush dog bed and put some old sweaters in there which is good because it adds your scent to it. At first, with my Chihuahua, I set the crate in the living room next to the couch while I watched tv, he would go in there and hang out with the door open. Once he trusted it more, I tried the same thing with the door closed. I even put an old sweater over the top of it to make it more like a hole or den. Now he just goes in and hangs out in there from time to time. Good luck.
Go with what you’ve started and a nice bed in there maybe a safe toy that the dog can’t destroy and in time as long as you do not put the dog in there for punishment He/She should come around but it will take some time.Good Luck!
ok he has no need to be scared make there as comfortable as possible like his toys a blanket . Every time he’s in there give him a treat put hum in the crate for a few mins a day . Then wen he gets more comfortable put him in there a little longer . Remember be beside hum the whole time giving him treats sooner or later he will get used to it.. I hope this helps
Try this, it usually works even with dogs that start out hating their crates;

put some blankets,pillows in there! and just keep the door open and if he wants to go in there he can!
but give it time:)
