How long is too long for a dog to be in his crate?

8

We just got a small dog and am trying to learn how to house/crate train. Do people crate their dog when they go to work? Ours sleeps well in his during the night but he can see my daughter at all times. If she gets up and out of his view, he cries and barks.

you sit in a crate and answer the question yourself. get a bird if you want to cage something.

How long would you like to be confined to a cage each day? Crate training is not training.

Dogs should not be left in a crate for more than 3-4 hours.

When I was crate training my dog he stayed in the crate while we were at work and when it was his bedtime. Anytime we left the apartment he was in his crate. When he begins to show responsibility you can gradually depend less on the crate.

Apart from sleeping it’s wise not to leave your dog in its crate for more than 4 hours. If you are going to be out that long you should really arrange for someone to come round and see the pup. Perhaps a pet sitter, dog walker or family or a friend.

It seems as though you haven’t introduced your pup to the crate properly and he now views it as a prison when he knows you and your daughter are up during the day. Encourage him to understand that his crate is a den, a safe place to be. Don’t just shove him in and leave him there.

The ASPCA and other dog training sites are excellent resources for crate training. I’d start there. I don’t think it’s good for a dog to be in small confined areas for long stretches. You might consider what a coworker of mine did — got some dog fencing and put it up in a room with a non-carpet floor. Covered flooring inside fencing with newspapers for easy cleanup. Crate in there so dog can sleep or feel safe — dog overall confined, but not in small box (crate). I think she had a puppy bulldog and had a 4′x6′ area. I think being confined too long messes with a dog’s head. It’s unnatural.

OH! and give your dog a small bit of treat every time he goes into his crate. we gave our dog Tabasco a treat when we crated him at night, and he STILL loves his crate. It’s a positive association.

Start with the ASPCA website. Good folks that know their stuff.
